UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
