The platform's Recommendation System Promotes Pornographic Material to Children, Indicates Investigation

Based on a new report carried out by a human rights group, TikTok's algorithm repeatedly recommends sexually explicit material and inappropriate videos to profiles belonging to minors.

Researchers set up fake underage profiles and activated safety features, yet still were shown sexually explicit search suggestions.

These recommended queries led to explicit content containing graphic footage depicting sexual acts.

The app asserts it is focused on delivering safe and age-appropriate content for users and implemented immediate action once the problem was identified.

Investigation Approach

During the summer months, investigators representing an advocacy organization established four simulated profiles pretending to be young teenagers.

They used false birthdates and did not need to submit further verification information.

Inappropriate Material Found

The team also enabled the platform's "safety mode", which reportedly prevents access to "adult or sensitive themes, such as inappropriate material".

Without performing specific queries, researchers found explicit search terms showing up in the "you may like" area of the app.

These terms led to content of women depicting masturbation.

Other videos displayed people flashing their underwear in public places or revealing private body parts.

At its most extreme, the material featured graphic pornographic films of sexual intercourse.

This content were hidden within other harmless videos in a successful attempt to bypass platform filters.

A representative from the advocacy organization stated that the findings came as a "significant concern" to the investigators.

"TikTok isn't just unable to stop children from accessing inappropriate material – it's also suggesting it to them immediately after they create an account."

Platform Reaction

When notified of the issue, TikTok stated it had implemented immediate action to address the problem.

However, when the research was conducted again in late July and August, the campaign group found that the app was still suggesting sexual content.

TikTok says it incorporates over 50 features intended to protect teens safe: "We are dedicated to providing secure and age-appropriate experiences."

TikTok claims it takes down nine out of 10 videos that violate its policies before they are ever viewed.

After being informed of the findings, TikTok stated it acted to "delete content that violated our policies and implement enhancements to our recommendation system."

Regulatory Context

On 25 July this year, the Online Safety Act's safeguarding regulations came into force, establishing a obligation to protect children on digital platforms.

Social media companies currently are required to use "highly effective age assurance" to stop minors from accessing adult content. They must also adjust their recommendation systems to block content which encourages harmful behavior, suicide or eating disorders.

The research group conducted its follow-up research project after the Children's Codes were implemented.

A representative from the group stated: "All parties agrees that we should ensure minors safe online… Now the moment has come for authorities to step in."

During their work, the team additionally noted the reaction of other users to the sexualized search terms they were being shown.

One user commented: "can someone clarify to me what's happening w my search recs pls?"

A different user asked: "what's wrong with this app?"
