Legal proceedings have been initiated against Tesla by the parents of a teenager who lost her life in a blazing electric vehicle crash last autumn. The incident involved four passengers who were inside the vehicle when it struck a tree and ignited in a quiet Bay Area town.

A single of the individuals involved in the accident made it out alive.

Legal Proceedings

This legal action, filed this week in Alameda county superior court, is being brought by the relatives of the victim, a 19-year-old college student who was with her relatives over Thanksgiving weekend in Piedmont, California when the tragedy occurred. This accident happened on the evening of 27 November 2024, when the electric pickup was traveling at high speed, struck a tree and ignited, according to an investigative document. When power to the truck’s electric doors was shut down by the blaze, the occupants were trapped within with no way out.

Allegations Regarding Door Handle Design

The lawsuit alleges the engineering of the Cybertruck’s door handles is at fault for the fatal outcome. From the inside of the truck, when power fails, the only way to exit a back entrance is by tugging a release cord that’s underneath a pocket liner under the interior panel, as detailed in an expert analysis. Externally, the entry points also stay secured and the flush handles make it challenging for emergency responders to jimmy their way inside.

Tesla has not responded to inquiries about the case.

“The design of this vehicle let down Krysta,” stated Roger Dreyer, the attorney representing the victim's relatives. “There was no functioning, accessible manual override or emergency release for her to get out safely.”

Design Scrutiny

The vehicle's entry mechanisms are a flagship design for the vehicles and a point of pride for company CEO, the tech billionaire. Teslas were the first make of car to be equipped with such electronic entry systems and are designed to be seamlessly integrated into the body of the car to give the vehicles a more sleek and streamlined look. But the feature has drawn criticism from car-safety experts and is presently under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“The manufacturer had multiple, clear awareness that its dependence on electric entry mechanisms posed a serious risk of being trapped,” states the legal document. “Drivers, witnesses, and emergency personnel reported instances where vehicle passengers survived crash forces but could not escape when the system lost power and flames erupted.”

Vehicle History

The Cybertruck has earned high safety ratings in safety evaluations, but the vehicle has also received eight recalls since it first debuted less than two years ago. Tesla has been embroiled in additional legal cases over vehicle safety, including a case in the Sunshine State where a jury decided in late summer that Tesla must award $243 million in compensation over its Autopilot feature.

Further Proceedings

The victim's relatives is also suing the driver's representatives, the individual behind the wheel, who at the time of the incident was impaired of multiple substances, as per a official autopsy from the local jurisdiction. Dixon also lost his life in the crash.

Rescue Attempt

On the evening of the tragedy, a companion was following the vehicle in a separate car and saw what happened, according to various news reports. The individual hurried to rescue his friends, breaking a glass panel on the Cybertruck. He was able to save a single occupant, but when he tried to rescue Tsukahara she could not to make it through the fire.

Fatal Outcome

This legal filing filed this week claims that Tsukahara did not experience bodily injury from the Cybertruck’s collision with the tree, but instead she died of smoke inhalation and fire injuries because she could not to exit the truck.

“This tragedy was avoidable,” the victim's mother and father, Carl and Noelle Tsukahara, said in a statement. “She was alive after the crash. She cried for assistance. And she was unable to escape.”
