Forecasters are reporting a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are forecast to be low, meaning extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Readings Expected to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Advisories Issued

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather was likely to trigger notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely key.
