Several drone sightings over Munich airport on Thursday evening forced aviation authorities to suspend operations, leading to the termination of seventeen flights and disrupting travel for almost three thousand travelers in the Bavarian capital.

An additional fifteen inbound flights were rerouted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna and Frankfurt, the airport authorities stated in a statement, representing the most recent UAV interference to Europe's air travel after similar sightings temporarily shut airfields in Denmark and Norway the previous week.

German aviation regulators restricted flight operations at Munich airport from late Thursday evening and later halted them completely due to several UAV appearances, the airport added.

The city was already on edge this week after its famous beer festival was briefly shut down due to a explosive warning and the finding of explosives in a apartment complex in the northern part of the metropolis.

EU Leaders Address Growing Drone Challenge

Danish authorities has avoided stating who it thinks is responsible for the incidents in its airspace recently, which disrupted air traffic at multiple airfields, but Denmark's leader Mette Frederiksen has suggested it might be Russia.

Frederiksen said Europe was in its "most difficult and dangerous situation" since the conclusion of the World War II, as she hosted EU leaders for talks on supporting Ukraine and strengthening European defence projects designed to guarantee the region is ready to prevent aggressors by 2030.

During the summit, officials supported proposals to enhance the union's protections against Moscow's UAVs.

Military Reaction Strengthens

On Sunday a Germany's naval vessel, FSG Hamburg, arrived in Copenhagen to contribute to "enhancing Denmark's airspace surveillance" during the meetings, Denmark's military announced.

The frigate is a component of Nato's "Baltic Sentry" mission, which the alliance said this weekend it intended to reinforce. A Nato spokesperson said there would be "heightened alertness" in the Baltic area, including Denmark.

Russian Rejections and Global Strains

Moscow's leader Putin remarked humorously recently that he would not fly drones over Denmark anymore, but Russian authorities has rejected blame for the events.
