LA Faces Record-Breaking Heat Just Days Following Severe Winter Storm.
In the wake of torrential rains that caused flooding across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now confronting abnormally warm conditions for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Heat
On Friday midday, the temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by the National Weather Service. This breaks the previous daily record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was recorded in 2025.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were labeled on official maps for the region.
Safety Alerts
Authorities stated that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance featured:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat arrives just after a intense storm system that struck the area earlier in the week. That event unleashed thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, leading to flash flood warnings for millions residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead a cooldown is expected. Readings were forecast to drop to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in downtown LA by overnight.
Additional areas that hit the 90-degree mark were Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Additionally, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to see the high eighties.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can expect readings in the 80s, with cooler weather likely for the start of March.
