Fireworks along with a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Delight over Agreement Bringing Back Hostages
The announcement of an agreement projected to lead to the freeing captives detained in the Gaza Strip for more than 24 months has generated joy and relief throughout the nation.
A group which has campaigned for the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The deal—still requiring approved by Israel’s war cabinet—involves the release of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 deceased captives in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees serving life sentences in Israeli jails and 1,700 detainees from Gaza.
To date, 148 captives have come back—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been recovered and eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes in Hostages’ Square
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled before the deal being signed.
The gathering began clapping and moving to music under American and Israeli banners—a female attendee displaying a placard that read: “We love Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
A different person, 50-year-old Yael, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We must witness them come back home to their families.”

Families Celebrate with Fireworks
The mom and sibling of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the news that he would be returned home.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker said as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the parent of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy was palpable throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv after the news.
Released Captives Say Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting “To life”, which means “for life”. She has been campaigning for the freedom of her friends, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their brother Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in pushing for an agreement which ensures the return of all those still being held within Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and here it is,” he said.
He stated he was “broken” that his cousin will not be among those coming back home yet felt “glowing with joy” for the families of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, remarked she experienced as if she were in “in a dream”.
“We are immensely thankful to President Trump and all he has accomplished on our behalf. We feel like it might be the beginning of the end of this nightmare, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than before,” she commented.
However, she warned that it remained too soon to rejoice.
“Until the last hostage returns, we’re not opening the champagne. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,” she said.
“So many things might occur until the last moment so this is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and ensure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only when the last captive is back home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling Iair, who was freed from detainment through a truce agreement earlier this year.
