Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
