Federal Closure Might Impact American Economy Billions of Dollars Weekly, Experts Caution

High-ranking administrators have acknowledged that the ongoing federal closure could negatively affect the American economic system. According to economic analysts, the economic impact may total billions weekly.

Economic Impact Analysis

"This method of shutting down the government and lowering economic growth is ineffective for constructive dialogue," stated the US treasury secretary. "We expect negative effects on economic expansion, economic development, and working Americans."

Extended failure to achieve consensus would be costly.

"Our evaluation indicates that every week of government shutdown would decrease US GDP growth by 0.1 ppt during the fourth quarter, representing an about $7 billion economic hit to the national economy," noted a detailed study.

Possible Outcomes of Extended Shutdown

Additional analysis suggests the financial impact could be even greater, with forecasts indicating potential losses of approximately $15 billion in gross domestic product each week. A monthlong shutdown could result in additional unemployment affecting thousands of workers.

Consumer spending in the United States could fall by about $30 billion during a 30-day closure.

Wider Financial Impacts

"Financial assessment demonstrates that the federal closure may have wide-ranging financial consequences that diminish American prospects through slower growth, higher joblessness, and disruptions to critical programs including social security, air travel, and food support programs," detailed the financial analysis.

"These consequences will intensify the longer the closure persists."

Previous Experience

Financial assessment noted that certain impacts would be somewhat mitigated by retroactive payments to employees and economic recovery following resolution of the closure, but cautioned about possible long-term consequences.

"Beyond immediate macroeconomic consequences, a government shutdown would also influence financial markets and business confidence," added the assessment. "Most critically, it would delay the release of crucial economic data during a critical period for the US economy – complicating the decision-making process for Federal Reserve policymakers, market participants, and business leaders who are managing a highly uncertain, information-reliant financial landscape."

The previous government shutdown, which continued for 35 days between December 2018 and January 2019, was projected to total at least $11 billion to the American economy, including permanent losses of approximately $3 billion, according to government assessment. The government document did not account for certain indirect impacts such as halted government approvals and reduced loan availability.
