Anthony Barry Reveals His Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, Anthony Barry competed in League Two. Today, he's dedicated to assist the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from athlete to trainer commenced as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He discovered his purpose.

Rapid Rise

The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing with his first major job, he built a name for innovative drills and great man-management. His club career led him to elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. His players include big names such as world-class talents. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the top as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their strategies include player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. The coach highlights “Team England” and avoids language including "pause".

“It's not time off or a pause,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says along with the manager as highly ambitious. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the entire field and that’s what we spend most of our time to. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes but to surpass them and set new standards. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in that period. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To develop a process enabling productivity in that window, we must utilize all the time available after our appointment. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. This period to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach ought to embody the best aspects of English football,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to move and run like they do every week, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data now. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger to get better is all-consuming. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns about the presentation, as his cohort featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into tough situations available to him to improve his talks. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

Barry graduated with top honors, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included won over and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants except Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and, four months later, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
